Cut and Paste

Remember when Graphic Design only meant cut and paste? Well I really don't..lol...only because I'm new to this stuff..but cut and paste things in a composition is my favorite. I guess because it makes you feel more like an artist instead of a graphic designer.
These are old projects that I found using found objects/pictures and scanning them.

Sketch Books

Sketch books for me are my favorite way to either sketch the people that I know or see and just make up things and put familiar faces on them. I also like them to use a very passive way to make fun of things/people which is actually very awesome!
While looking through my sketchbook I found my favorite quote from Georgia O'Keeffe that when I read it, I felt like she pretty much summed up my feelings for my paintings.
"The abstraction is often the most definite form for the intangible thing in myself that I can only clarify in paint."

What can a Picture Tell you?

I never had a chance to know my dad all that much but when he passed away when I was 20 and had a chance to go through his old photos they made me feel closer to him. They are probably one of the few things that I would save if there was ever a fire. I have to make up my own stories, but it's fine. The unknown is almost better then the known. So when I went to the University of Minnesota I made a series of Illustrations on torn old paper of favorite photos of my father that I loved, that told his character, and that where the ones in which I could make up the most stories. My illustrations are blurry and you can't really make everything out if anything but I guess I was trying to say that's how I felt about those photos. Every time I see those illustrations I made, they are kind of magical to me. I guess it's hard to express to other people what I have done, but sometimes I look at them and think how I nailed it right on the dot. Maybe other people get it too.

Idea for Artist Statement

Well I've been concentrating on this artist lately named Pieter Bruegel. While are Art looks completely different we have a lot in common in our sincere purpose. Above is his work called "Icarus". Farmers are shown working in pastoral fields while a tiny Icarus falls to his death in the background sky. Bruegel is famous for painting peasants and painting bucolic foreground with strange, sinister objects in the background of the painting.

While Bruegel and My paintings are very different visually, we are very similar in the intent and message that we are trying to perceive. For my artist statement I would like to tie in the ideas in that both of our paintings are really up to who views them. Like mine and Bruegel you can really focus on the bad or the reality, In my paintings its obvious, I like to use a lot of "ugly" textures like duct tape, ripped materials, anything that I can find. It's really a choice in what you see is beautiful. I like the idea that you can make anything beautiful in someway, just as in life. There are painful, ugly things but there are also natural beautiful things and these are the things that must co exist in life.

Beatriz Milhazes

http://www.jamescohan.com/artists/beatriz-milhazes/
This is one of my favorite artists and if you don't know who she is by now then you should! Whenever I reference her no one seems to know who she is and while I love to feel cool by telling them, I think that everyone should know who this artist because she creates a lot of amazing pieces.
